Batrachomoeus trispinosus Freshwater Lionfish – Medium $34.99 The Freshwater Lionfish has a very misleading common name, as this fish is actually brackish, and is not related to lionfish. It is properly named the Three-spined Frogfish. These fish may have mildly venomous spines on their backs, so use caution. They are mottled brown in color, and have large mouths. The coloration varies greatly between specimens. Many small growths cover the face area, which help it to blend in with rocks and algae growth. The dorsal fin is set at the rear half of the body and extends to the tail. Its wide pectoral fins are often used to support itself when resting. Both species inhabit coastal muddy brackish areas and mangrove estuaries as well as offshore marine environments. In the home aquarium, they are best kept in brackish water. Freshwater Lionfish are hardy fish that can adapt to a variety of water conditions. They are tropical, however, and should not be kept in temperatures below 72 degrees F. Both species are predatory and will eat anything that they can fit into their mouths. As long as the tankmates are too large to be eaten, the freshwater lionfish is usually passive. Large predatory brackish species make suitable tankmates. Freshwater lionfish can be fed most appropriately sized live foods, and can sometimes be trained to accept frozen meaty items such as krill, shrimp, silversides, and beefheart. Use rocks or PVC pipes to create caves and other shelters. This fish will spend most of its time at the bottom of the tank, where it camouflages itself among the decor. |

Freshwater Aquariums…..Adding rocks?
Is it okay to add any rocks i find to the tank right away? I currently care for Saltwater Tanks and I told my brother inlaw, who has freshwater tanks that he should not just throw any rocks he finds in the tank without some sort of process to cure the rocks. I just need to know the facts about this and the hazards it may cause before he goes ahead with it.
if you want to add rocks its time for a crash course in geology.
rocks you don’t want to add are sedimenatry rocks. things like limestone and marble will seep minerals into you water and change the ph and hardness.
good rock choice are granite, volcano rock, and slate. they are formed with heat and lots of pressure so they don’t break down so easily. if you are in doubt as far as to what the rock is it is better not to use it.
